What you'll study

Coursework covers foundational themes common to heritage practitioners, such as conservation and management of heritage resources and the design and delivery of interpretive programming and services. The program balances general principles with specific case studies and representative situations from diverse heritage contexts. Students complete core courses, elective options in specialized topics (for example architectural conservation, heritage risk management, or interpretive programming where available), and a 400-hour practicum to apply learning in a workplace setting.

Entry requirements

Admission requires a baccalaureate degree and demonstrated competence in specific heritage areas. Applicants must complete at least 12 credits through Athabasca University and may be required to take up to four undergraduate courses in foundational heritage practice. One program requirement is competence in the topics covered in HERM 322, HERM 327, HERM 339, and PHIL/HERM 334. Students may begin courses as non-program students prior to formal acceptance.

Career prospects

Graduates leave with a grounding in heritage theory and established practice and practical experience from the practicum, preparing them for roles in museums, historic sites, conservation projects, interpretive programming, policy or consultancy work, and related heritage institutions. The credential also functions as a stepping stone to further academic study, notably entry to the MA – Interdisciplinary Studies (Heritage and Social History) with credit transfer.

Program fees and tuition apply; Athabasca University lists course tuition and practicum fees and notes additional administrative charges. Indigenous Canadian graduate students are eligible for a 10% tuition discount on the graduate course portion starting Sep. 1, 2026.
