A research-focused doctoral program delivering interdisciplinary training in nervous system structure and function. Suited to students aiming for research, clinical-adjacent, or industry careers that require deep neuroscience expertise and cross-disciplinary methods.
This STEM-designated PhD provides research training and didactic coursework across an interdisciplinary faculty from biological sciences, engineering, physical therapy–exercise science, computational and statistical sciences, philosophy, and psychology. The program requires 45 credit hours and typically takes 5–6 years to complete. International graduates are eligible for up to 36 months of Optional Practical Training (STEM OPT).
The curriculum builds a broad foundation in neuroscience and permits specialization through focused coursework and research. Students choose one of three specializations:
Faculty contributors span departments including Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, Philosophy, Physical Therapy–Exercise Science, Psychology, and Occupational Therapy.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (or international equivalent) before starting. A minimum GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale is required. Non-U.S. citizens must demonstrate English proficiency. Application materials include the online form and fee, transcripts (course-by-course evaluation for international coursework), a statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation, and a resume/CV. The committee conducts phone interviews and then on-campus interviews for finalists. Applications for fall consideration should be received by December 1.
The program prepares graduates for doctoral-level roles across research, medicine-adjacent fields, industry, and other sectors where neuroscience expertise is valued. Emphasis on interdisciplinary training equips students for positions in academic research labs, neurotechnology, rehabilitation science, and roles that integrate computational or clinical approaches.
Research and teaching assistantships are available; private scholarships may also be possible. U.S. citizens and permanent residents can explore need-based federal loans.
