The PhD in Computer Science at Marquette University is a STEM-designated, full-time doctoral program that emphasizes applied research and interdisciplinary collaboration. Entry requirements

• Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution or international equivalent completed prior to starting the program.
• Must be a computer science major; a computer science minor is acceptable provided Calculus I and II have been completed. A bachelor's in a related discipline is also required.
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
• For non-U.S. citizens: demonstrated English proficiency (TOEFL or other acceptable proof).
• Application components: online application and fee, transcripts (or course-by-course evaluation for international coursework), three letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, resume/CV, and (optional but recommended) English-language publications or a master’s thesis.
• GRE general test is normally required but listed as optional for the 2026–2027 academic year.
• Priority application deadline for fall admission and merit-based aid consideration: January 15; after that applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with fall admission final deadlines noted (e.g., August 1; June 1 for international applicants).

Students are generally funded through research assistantships and teaching assistantships while in good standing. The program’s STEM designation also enables eligible international graduates to apply for up to 36 months of Optional Practical Training.
