The Ambassadorial Scholarships Program by The Rotary Foundation

Introduction:

The oldest and most renowned initiative of The Rotary Foundation is the Ambassadorial Scholarships program, which has been operational since 1947. Over 30,000 individuals from 100 different nations have benefited from this program, engaging in educational pursuits overseas. Today, it stands as the largest privately funded international scholarships program globally, awarding more than 1,200 scholarships for study during the 2000-01 academic year. With a funding contribution of around US$26 million, recipients from 69 countries embarked on educational journeys to over 64 nations.

Promoting International Understanding: The primary aim of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to foster international understanding and cultivate amicable relations among individuals from diverse countries. The program encompasses various categories of scholarships tailored for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as for skilled professionals pursuing vocational studies. While studying abroad, these scholars act as goodwill ambassadors, engaging with the local community and delivering presentations about their home countries to Rotary clubs and other organizations. Once they return to their home countries, these scholars share their experiences with Rotary members and others, contributing to a deeper appreciation of their host countries.

Specific Guidelines for Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships

The Rotary Foundation has established clear and specific guidelines to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program. Prospective candidates must be aware of these guidelines before proceeding with their applications:

  1. Study Location Restrictions: Scholarship recipients must undertake their study or training in a country or territory with Rotary clubs, excluding the sponsoring Rotary country or district.

  2. Assignment of Study Locations: While applicants can express their preferred study locations, the final decision on assignments rests with the Rotary Foundation Trustees. This is to ensure a broad geographical distribution of scholars. Candidates must be flexible and open to the possibility of being assigned to any suitable institution.

  3. Residency and Study History: Scholars will not be assigned to study in a city, state, or province where they have previously lived or studied for more than six months. Therefore, these scholarships are not suitable for foreign students aiming to continue their studies at a particular university.

  4. Application and Admission Process: Each scholar is responsible for applying directly to the assigned study institution, obtaining admission, securing the necessary visas, and making travel arrangements. The scholarship cannot be used in conjunction with study-abroad programs affiliated with the scholar's home country institution.

  5. Financial Responsibility: Scholars must secure additional funding to cover all expenses not covered by their scholarships or not deemed sufficient. Scholarships will not be adjusted to accommodate spouses, dependents, or any individuals other than the scholar themselves.

  6. External Funding and Taxation: Scholars may receive supplementary funding from other sources during their scholarship period, but The Rotary Foundation will not replicate funds provided by other sources. Depending on tax regulations in both the home and host countries, the scholarships may be partially or fully taxable. Scholars are responsible for understanding and complying with tax regulations related to scholarship funding.

  7. Eligible Fields of Study and Restrictions: Academic-Year and Multi-Year Scholarships are applicable to a wide range of fields, except for unsupervised research, medical internships or residencies, and employment. Scholars planning to pursue medical studies will not be permitted to engage in hands-on procedures or direct-care patient services during the scholarship period.

  8. Language Proficiency: Candidates applying for Academic-Year or Multi-Year scholarships who have a native language different from that of the proposed study country must provide evidence of their ability to read, write, and speak the language of that country. Additionally, Academic-Year Scholarship candidates must successfully complete a language proficiency examination specified by the Foundation.

These comprehensive guidelines are designed to ensure that the Ambassadorial Scholarships program remains impactful, equitable, and aligned with its objectives of fostering international understanding and goodwill. Applicants should thoroughly understand and adhere to these guidelines when applying for the scholarships through their local Rotary clubs.
