The University of Stuttgart in Germany is offering an exciting opportunity for international students to pursue fully-funded PhD positions in Environmental Microbiology under the ENWAT Project. The program focuses on understanding the seasonal variation of greenhouse gas (GHG) production in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and offers research training in state-of-the-art microbiological and environmental techniques.

The PhD project investigates microbial interactions and their impact on greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater treatment plants. Research methods include:

  • 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, metagenomics & metatranscriptomics

  • Aerobic/anaerobic enrichment of microbial communities

  • Electrochemical sensors, FTIR, HPLC, IC, and GC-MS for emissions quantification

  • Laboratory microcosms and in situ field experiments

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Educational Background:

    • Master’s degree (M.Sc., Dipl.-Ing., or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Microbiology, Water Resources Management, or related sciences.

    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

  • Experience & Skills:

    • Strong foundation in molecular ecology and environmental microbiology.

    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

    • Strong computer, communication, and scientific writing skills.

  • Additional Conditions:

    • Only international (non-German) applicants are eligible.

    • At the time of nomination to DAAD (December 2025):

      • No more than 6 years since last degree.

      • Must not have resided in Germany for more than 15 months.

    • Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, or prior degrees taught in English).

    • Two recommendation letters from professors (issued within the last 2 years).

    • Motivation letter (1 page).

    • CV with academic achievements and publications.
