IIE-SRF Fully Funded Fellowships 2024-25 for International PhD Students.

The IIE-SRF Fellowship for the academic year 2024-2025 offers a fully funded opportunity for international doctoral students
conducting research. This fellowship provides a grant of up to US$25,000, inclusive of individual health insurance, supporting a visiting academic appointment lasting up to a year.






The fellowship also collaborates with the Baden-Württemberg Fund, aiding researchers in the liberty and security field by offering visiting research appointments at universities and higher education institutions in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. Eligible candidates encompass teachers, senior scientists, and government intellectuals from any nation or academic discipline facing or having recently fled targeted threats to their life and career in their home country or nation of permanent residence.

Established in 2002, the IIE Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) was created by Dr. Henry Jarecki, Dr. Henry Kaufman, and Mr. Thomas Russo, following the dedication of the IIE trustees to consistently support scholars in need. Since its founding in 1919, the IIE has prioritized safeguarding endangered researchers and students. Its commitment to defending the right to freedom of thought and pursuit of knowledge has been evident through historical events like the Bolshevik Revolution and the Hungarian Uprising

Eligibility Criteria

  • Language Requirement: Proficiency in English.
  • Professors, senior researchers, and public intellectuals from any nation, academic field, or discipline are eligible to apply.
  • Applications undergo assessment based on academic qualifications, the quality/potential of the applicant's work, and the severity of threats faced.
  • Preference is given to scholars who:
    • Hold a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field or possess extensive teaching or research experience at a university, college, or similar institution of higher learning.
    • Are encountering immediate, severe, and targeted threats to their lives and/or careers in their home countries or nations of residence, or have recently fled such threats.
    • Demonstrate exceptional academic achievements and potential.
    • Can contribute positively to their home and/or host academic communities.

Application Procedure

To apply for the IIE-SRF Fellowship, follow these steps:

(1) Prepare the required application materials, which include:

  • Application Form.
  • Academic statement: Provide a comprehensive statement outlining your academic and professional background and experience.
  • Current CV or resume.
  • Personal statement: Explain in detail why you are seeking support from IIE-SRF.
  • Two (2) academic/professional letters of reference: These should come from colleagues familiar with your research, publications, teaching, or advanced academic experience.
  • Two (2) personal letters of reference: These should be from individuals aware of the difficulties you've faced and knowledgeable about your professional background. Letters on official letterhead are preferred and should be sent directly to IIE-SRF at srf@iie.org.
  • Copy of your Ph.D. or highest degree.
  • Samples of your recent writing or research publications.
  • Optionally, a letter from an accredited institution willing to host your fellowship.
