What you'll study

This programme focuses on advanced study of teaching methods, curriculum design, assessment and adult learning theory as they apply to continued professional development. Students select a specific level and method strand (for example elementary education, secondary content areas, special education, reading/literacy, or STEM methods) and complete coursework that integrates theory with classroom-based inquiry.

• Core topics: principles of professional learning and development, curriculum theory, assessment for learning, instructional leadership, research methods in education, and programme evaluation.
• Method/level strands: focused coursework in the chosen level and method such as elementary pedagogy, secondary subject-specific methods (e.g. mathematics, science, social studies, English), literacy instruction, or special education strategies.
• Practicum and inquiry: classroom-based action research or capstone projects that address real school improvement needs, supervised practica with mentoring and coaching components, and portfolio-based assessment.
• Electives and certificated options: elective seminars in technology-enhanced instruction, culturally responsive pedagogy, coaching and mentoring, and options to pursue endorsements or additional certifications where state rules permit.

Course delivery is often offered in flexible formats including evening, hybrid and online courses to accommodate working professionals. Program length varies by prior credits and whether students study full-time or part-time.

Entry requirements

• A completed undergraduate degree from an accredited institution. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in education or a related field are typically preferred.
• Professional teaching certification or licence is usually required for the specific levels and methods pathways; applicants without current certification may be admitted to non-certification or alternate routes depending on state and programme policy.
• A minimum cumulative GPA at undergraduate level (equivalent to a second-class upper/2:1 or commonly advertised graduate threshold) or equivalent professional experience may be required; exact GPA expectations are set by the programme.
• Supporting materials such as a statement of purpose describing professional goals, current résumé/CV, and professional references. Some applicants may be asked to participate in an interview or submit examples of professional work.
• International applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements and provide transcripts evaluated for U.S. equivalence.
