What you'll study

The programme combines foundational coursework in mental health and social services with applied clinical training. Core subjects typically include counselling theories and modalities, psychopathology and diagnosis, clinical assessment and testing, treatment planning, ethics and professional issues, multicultural competence, and evidence-based interventions such as cognitive-behavioural and trauma-informed approaches. Training in group therapy, family systems, crisis intervention, substance-use treatment and prevention is commonly included.

Research methods and program evaluation are covered to prepare graduates to understand outcome data and contribute to service development. A substantial supervised practicum or internship is an integral component: students complete clinical hours in community agencies, schools, hospitals or specialised clinics under the supervision of licensed clinicians. Many programmes also offer elective options or seminars in subjects such as child and adolescent mental health, geriatric mental health, integrated behavioural health, and policy or leadership in human services.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Typical application materials include academic transcripts, a personal statement outlining clinical interests and career goals, letters of recommendation (often two), and a CV or résumé. Relevant paid or volunteer experience in mental health, social services or allied settings strengthens an application. Some programmes require an interview as part of the selection process.

Other common requirements include satisfactory academic standing (a minimum GPA or equivalent), successful completion of any prerequisite coursework in statistics or psychology where required, and, for international applicants, evidence of English language proficiency. Clearance checks such as background screening and proof of immunisation may be required before placement in practicum settings.

Other pathways include employment in hospitals, community mental health centres, residential treatment facilities, primary care integration teams, advocacy organisations and research or policy roles.
