What you'll study

The BSN combines foundational biomedical sciences with progressive nursing theory and applied clinical practice. Early study emphasises anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology and pathophysiology alongside communication, ethics and professional issues in healthcare. Core nursing modules move from fundamentals of nursing care to specialised practice areas: adult health, maternal and newborn care, paediatrics, mental health nursing, community and public health nursing, and gerontological care.

Students choose or are supported to develop focused strands in:

• Nursing Administration: leadership and management in health services, quality improvement, healthcare finance and human resource management for nursing teams.
• Nursing Research: research methods, biostatistics, evidence-based practice, critical appraisal and preparation for participation in clinical research projects.
• Clinical Nursing: advanced clinical assessment, complex care management, speciality clinical practicum and preparation for frontline clinical roles.

Practical learning is delivered through supervised clinical placements across acute, primary and community settings and through high-fidelity simulation labs. The curriculum culminates in advanced clinical practicums and a capstone experience that integrates leadership, research literacy and clinical competence.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a secondary-school leaving qualification with competitive academic performance in science subjects. Typical prerequisites include coursework in biology (with lab), chemistry (with lab), and mathematics or statistics; colleges of nursing may also expect English composition. Selection commonly considers overall academic record, prerequisite grades, and a standardised admissions test (for example, TEAS or equivalent) where required.

Additional requirements usually include documented immunisations, basic life support (BLS/CPR) certification, a clear criminal background check and ability to meet health and mobility standards required for clinical placements. Some routes (such as accelerated or RN-to-BSN pathways) require prior university study or an active registered nurse licence.

Career prospects

Graduates are eligible to sit for the national licensure examination for registered nurses and typically enter clinical roles in hospitals, community health services, primary care and social care organisations. Career paths include bedside staff nurse, community/public health nurse, specialist clinical roles, charge nurse and ward manager positions.

Those who focus on Nursing Administration commonly move into leadership, workforce planning and quality roles within healthcare organisations. Graduates who concentrate on Nursing Research are well placed to work in clinical research coordination, audit and evidence‑based practice teams or to continue to postgraduate study (MSc, PhD) leading to careers in research and academic practice. The Clinical Nursing strand supports progression into specialist clinical areas, advanced practice preparation and postgraduate clinical qualifications.
