What you'll study

The programme combines core coursework in modern biological principles with laboratory rotations, electives and a research or project-based capstone. Core topics typically include molecular and cell biology, genetics, biostatistics and experimental design, and ecology and evolution. Students also study contemporary techniques such as molecular cloning, microscopy, sequencing technologies, bioinformatics and quantitative data analysis.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, environmental science or a closely related discipline, with evidence of strong preparation in foundational courses (e.g. general biology, chemistry, genetics, and statistics). Typical application materials include academic transcripts, a personal statement outlining research interests and career goals, two or three academic or professional letters of recommendation, and a current CV or résumé.

USF may require proof of English language proficiency for applicants whose first language is not English. Some applicants with non-traditional backgrounds but substantial laboratory experience or relevant coursework may be considered. GRE scores are not universally required; applicants should check the department’s admissions guidance for up-to-date information.
