This PhD combines advanced research methods with subject-matter depth in facilities and resource management for parks, recreation and leisure systems. Core study typically covers quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, advanced statistics, and programme evaluation alongside specialised topics such as facility planning and design, asset and life‑cycle management, risk and safety management, visitor use and experience, sustainable operations, and recreation policy and governance.

• Research methods and statistics: advanced quantitative modelling, mixed methods, spatial analysis and survey design for visitor and facility research.
• Facilities and asset management: life‑cycle costing, maintenance planning, capital programming and performance metrics for recreation infrastructure.
• Visitor use and experience: visitor monitoring, carrying capacity, interpretive planning and social carrying capacity studies.
• Risk, safety and operations: risk assessment, emergency planning, and operational protocols for parks and leisure facilities.
• Sustainability and design: sustainable site and building practices, green operations, and design principles for resilient recreational spaces.
• Policy, governance and economics: public policy for parks and recreation, funding and finance, stakeholder engagement and interagency collaboration.

The programme is thesis-driven; most candidates also design and complete a substantive dissertation that contributes original knowledge to the field. Students work closely with a supervisory committee, take seminars to present and critique research, and typically engage in teaching or extension responsibilities as part of their training.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a relevant master’s degree (for example in parks and recreation, leisure studies, natural resource management, urban planning, public administration, or a closely related discipline). Strong applicants demonstrate: a clear research agenda, relevant professional or research experience, and preparation in research methods.

• Academic record: a recognised master’s degree with evidence of strong academic performance.
• Research preparation: prior coursework or experience in research methods and statistics is highly recommended.
• Application materials: a statement of purpose outlining proposed research interests, a curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, and at least three letters of recommendation.
• English language proficiency: for international applicants, proof of English proficiency in accordance with university requirements.
• Additional considerations: a writing sample or brief research proposal is often requested; relevant professional experience in parks, recreation or facilities management strengthens an application. Admissions decisions are made by faculty based on fit with supervisory expertise and programme capacity.
