What you'll study

The programme combines core sociological theory and methods with applied electives that reflect the social realities of a diverse, urban region. Typical core modules include Social Theory, Quantitative Methods and Statistics, Qualitative Research Methods, and Seminar in Sociological Research. Elective and topical modules commonly offered are Urban Sociology, Migration and Transnationalism, Race and Ethnicity, Inequality and Social Stratification, Crime and Social Control, Family and Life-course, and Policy Analysis.

Students choose between thesis and non-thesis pathways. The thesis route emphasises independent research supervised by faculty and culminates in an original research project. The non-thesis option often includes a practicum or internship component and a capstone research seminar or project. Across both tracks, students gain hands-on experience in data collection and analysis (including training in statistical software), qualitative interviewing, research design, and the communication of findings to academic and non-academic audiences.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with good academic standing, preferably in sociology or a related social science (psychology, anthropology, political science, economics, public health). Candidates with relevant professional experience and a strong quantitative or methodological background may also be considered.

Typical application materials include a transcript, a personal statement outlining academic and professional goals, and letters of recommendation. Some applicants may be asked to submit a writing sample or evidence of prior research. GRE requirements vary and should be confirmed with the department; international applicants must demonstrate English proficiency through recognised tests unless exempt.
