What you'll study

The programme combines applied musicianship with academic study and practical theatre-music collaboration. Core areas typically include advanced applied performance or composition, graduate-level music theory and history, research methods, and studies in music technology and pedagogy. Students take performance seminars, chamber and orchestral ensembles, composition workshops, and courses addressing scoring for theatre, musical direction, dramaturgy for musical performance, and interdisciplinary collaboration with actors and directors.

Assessment commonly blends public recitals or staged projects, a portfolio of compositions or creative work, written research (essay or thesis option) and practicum-based assessments such as music direction or teaching demonstrations. Many students pursue elective coursework in recording and production, electroacoustic media, or collaborative theatre-making to tailor the degree to performance, composition, pedagogical or production career goals.

Entry requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in music or a related discipline, or equivalent preparation demonstrating the ability to undertake graduate work in music.
• An audition or portfolio submission appropriate to the applicant’s focus: applicants concentrating in performance typically submit an audition; composers submit scores and recordings; theatre-music applicants submit relevant production samples.
• Academic transcripts from undergraduate and any prior graduate study.
• Letters of recommendation (usually two or three) from academic instructors or professional references who can speak to the applicant’s musical and/or theatrical experience.
• A personal statement describing musical background, professional aims and reasons for choosing an interdisciplinary music–theatre programme.
• Proof of English language proficiency for international applicants where required by the university (e.g. recognised English test scores or equivalent evidence of proficiency).
