What you'll study

This PhD emphasises theory-driven and empirical inquiry into leadership, administration and supervision of educational organisations. You study advanced research methods (both quantitative and qualitative), leadership theory, organisational behaviour, policy analysis and the historical and philosophical foundations of educational administration. Core topics commonly include school law and governance, finance and resource management, curriculum leadership, personnel supervision and evaluation, educational change and improvement, and equity and community engagement.

Programme structure typically combines coursework, comprehensive examinations, practicum or supervised leadership experience, and independent dissertation research. Early coursework builds a strong methodological foundation (e.g. multivariate statistics, program evaluation, qualitative inquiry), while later work focuses on specialised seminars and a sustained research project that contributes original knowledge to the field. Students often pursue elective coursework or collaborative projects in related areas such as policy studies, special education, community engagement, or higher education.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant master’s degree (for example in education, educational leadership, public administration or a close discipline) with a strong academic record. Typical admission materials include a detailed curriculum vitae, a statement of purpose describing research interests and professional goals, academic transcripts, letters of recommendation (often including at least one from an academic referee), and a writing sample or research portfolio.

Research fit with faculty is an important consideration; applicants should identify potential supervisors whose expertise matches their intended research area. Some programmes request evidence of leadership experience in educational settings. International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency in line with university requirements. Standardised test requirements (such as the GRE) vary by cohort and should be checked with the School of Education.
