What you'll study

The programme blends core geographic concepts with environmental science and policy. Typical modules include Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis, remote sensing, quantitative methods and spatial statistics, field methods in physical geography, environmental policy and governance, land-use and landscape ecology, climate impacts and adaptation, and research design. Students choose between a thesis option, which emphasises original research and data analysis, and a coursework/project option focused on applied skills and professional practice.

• Core skills: spatial data management, geospatial modelling, statistical inference, and field sampling techniques.
• Specialist topics: watershed science, urban-environment interactions, conservation planning, sustainable development and environmental justice.
• Research and practicum: independent research project or practicum placement with opportunities to work with local government, non-profits or industry partners.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised bachelor's degree in geography, environmental science, earth science or a related discipline. A background in quantitative methods, statistics, or basic GIS is advantageous. Typical application materials include transcripts, a statement of purpose outlining research or professional goals, CV, and two or three academic or professional references. International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency through recognised tests unless otherwise exempt.

Admission is competitive and the department evaluates applicants on academic preparation, relevant experience, research fit with faculty expertise, and the strength of supporting documents. Some applicants may be invited to discuss their application with faculty as part of the review.
