What you'll study

The EdD combines advanced research training with sustained investigation of a practice-based problem in education. You will complete a taught research methods programme that prepares you for empirical and/or design-based research, followed by a substantial practitioner-focused thesis developed in close collaboration with your supervisors and professional context.

• Core research methods: qualitative and quantitative approaches, research design, ethics and critical interpretation of evidence.
• Applied inquiry modules: practice-led research, implementation and evaluation, and translating evidence into policy and practice.
• Theory and context: contemporary debates in education policy, leadership, curriculum and assessment depending on your specialism.
• Professional development:
• Doctoral thesis: an extended, original, practice-oriented research project supervised by a member of the School of Education and Lifelong Learning. The thesis is grounded in your professional setting and aimed at making an impact on practice or policy.

Study modes are typically flexible to accommodate working professionals, combining intensive taught blocks, online seminars, and individual supervision. You will also participate in research seminars, cohort workshops and, where appropriate, placement or partner-institution activity.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally hold a good master's degree in education or a related discipline with a significant research component and have substantial professional experience in an education or allied setting. Typical applicants are senior practitioners, school leaders, local authority officers or policy professionals with a clearly articulated problem of practice and a feasible research proposal.

• Academic qualifications: a relevant postgraduate qualification at master’s level or equivalent professional experience with evidence of prior study and research capability.
• Professional experience: evidence of leadership, sustained professional responsibility or experience relevant to the proposed research topic.
• Research proposal: a concise proposal outlining the research question, rationale, approach and likely methodology.
• References and interview: strong academic or professional references and satisfactory interview or discussion with prospective supervisors.
• English language: if your first language is not English, you must meet the University’s English language requirements.
