The programme centres on advanced studio practice combined with critical and contextual study. Core elements include sustained independent studio work, regular critique, and seminars in contemporary art theory and methodology. Students can work across a range of media — painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, metals and jewellery, photography, time-based media and digital/new media — with access to specialist workshops and technical instruction.

Typical modules and activities include:

• Studio Practice – ongoing independent projects developed under faculty supervision, with weekly critiques and peer review.
• Graduate Seminars – seminars in contemporary art theory, research methods, curatorial practice and visual culture.
• Technical Electives – intensive workshops in printmaking, sculpture fabrication, digital imaging, ceramics, metalsmithing and other technical areas.
• Professional Practices – courses and workshops on artist statements, grant writing, portfolio development, exhibition planning and arts entrepreneurship.
• Teaching Experience – many students undertake graduate assistantships or supervised teaching practica to develop pedagogical skills.
• MFA Thesis and Exhibition – culminating written thesis or curatorial project alongside a public graduate exhibition of studio work.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate degree in fine art, visual arts, design or a closely related field. Strong applicants without a directly related degree will need to demonstrate equivalent studio experience.

• Completed application form and institutional transcripts showing academic history.
• Portfolio of recent work demonstrating technical competence, conceptual development and a coherent direction in practice.
• Statement of purpose outlining artistic goals, research interests and reasons for applying to the programme.
• Letters of recommendation, typically two to three, from tutors or professional referees familiar with the applicant’s work.
• Interview or portfolio review may be requested as part of the selection process; teaching experience or interest in pedagogy is desirable for candidates seeking assistantships.
