What you'll study

Coursework combines classroom, laboratory and intensive clinical training. Core didactic topics named in the program include:

Clinical exposure begins during the didactic year and continues through Year II (Clinical Phase) and Year III (Advanced Clinical Phase) with supervised, hands-on rotations in inpatient and outpatient settings. Required clinical rotation areas include emergency medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, primary care/family medicine, psychiatry/behavioral medicine, and women’s health; experiences also occur in operating rooms and emergency departments.

Entry requirements

Students enter Wagner as PA majors and complete two years of pre-PA prerequisite coursework and general education before interviewing for continuation into the three-year PA professional program. Admission and continuation standards include maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2, a semester GPA of at least 3.0, and a cumulative science GPA of 3.0 with a grade of C+ or higher in science courses. Applicants must complete at least 100 hours of community service (or 25 hours per semester). Prior healthcare experience is not required but can strengthen an application. Second-degree applicants follow the same academic standards and are interviewed prior to program start.

Career prospects

Graduates receive both BS and MS degrees upon completing the prescribed program and are eligible to take the national certifying examination for Physician Assistants (PA-C). The curriculum’s clinical rotations prepare students for clinical practice across a range of medical and surgical settings, enabling entry into hospital, clinic, and outpatient roles under physician supervision.
