What you'll study

The Applied Computer Science programme emphasises practical skills in software development, systems integration and applied computing. You will study core topics such as programming (object-oriented and procedural), data structures and algorithms, computer architecture, operating systems, and software engineering. Applied and elective units typically include databases and information management, web and mobile application development, networking and security fundamentals, human–computer interaction, embedded and real-time systems, and introductory artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Coursework combines lectures with laboratory and project work. Most students complete team-based projects each year, and a senior capstone or practicum that integrates design, implementation and testing in a realistic setting. Opportunities exist for internships, independent study and participation in faculty-led research or community technology projects.

Entry requirements

Admission to the bachelor programme normally requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Successful applicants typically present a solid record in mathematics (algebra and precalculus; calculus is recommended) and demonstrated aptitude in quantitative subjects. Some experience with programming or computing (courses, self-study, or extracurricular projects) is advantageous but not always mandatory.

International applicants must meet Central Washington University’s general requirements for undergraduate admission, including proof of English language proficiency where required. Transfer students from community colleges are considered; articulation agreements and transfer credit assessments determine which lower-division courses are accepted toward the degree.
