What you'll study

This programme provides a broad scientific grounding in the processes that shape the natural environment and the human activities that affect them. Core themes include ecology and biodiversity, earth surface processes and soils, atmospheric and aquatic chemistry, pollution and remediation, environmental systems and modelling, and environmental policy and governance. You will develop practical laboratory and field skills, quantitative and statistical methods, and experience in geographic information systems (GIS).

Typical first-year modules introduce fundamental concepts in ecology, chemistry, earth systems and data analysis. In subsequent years you build on these foundations with specialist options such as contaminant fate and transport, climate change science, conservation biology, hydrology and catchment science, environmental monitoring, and environmental impact assessment. Practical work is integrated throughout the degree and includes laboratory projects, computing and GIS exercises, and residential field courses that make use of local and regional field sites.

The course structure usually includes a combination of compulsory modules to ensure core scientific competence and optional modules to allow you to focus on interests such as pollution science, conservation, sustainability or modelling. Many students undertake a substantial independent research project in the final year under academic supervision, which develops research skills and subject expertise. Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have a strong science background. Typical A-level entry is mainly in science or mathematics subjects; universities generally look for good grades in at least two science or mathematics A-levels. Relevant subjects include Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Environmental Science, Physics and Mathematics.

Alternative qualifications are considered, including BTECs with strong science content, Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers, the International Baccalaureate with a competitive overall score and higher-level science/maths, and equivalent international qualifications. Admissions also take account of personal statements, references and any relevant experience such as volunteering or fieldwork. GCSE requirements may include passes in English and Mathematics at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent).
