What you'll study

This PhD blends advanced research methods, theory development, leadership and clinical scholarship. Students complete core doctoral coursework in nursing theory, advanced research design and statistics, and ethics in health research, followed by concentration-specific seminars and a sustained dissertation project.

• Core modules: nursing theory and conceptual models, advanced quantitative methods, advanced qualitative methods, biostatistics for clinical researchers, research ethics and regulatory issues.
• Nursing administration & leadership: organisational behaviour in healthcare, strategic planning and financial management for nurse leaders, quality improvement and patient safety, health policy and systems change.
• Nursing research: grant writing and research dissemination, mixed-methods research design, measurement and instrument development, implementation science.
• Clinical nursing and practice-focused study: advanced clinical scholarship, translational research in practice settings, clinical outcomes evaluation and specialty seminars aligned with students' clinical focus.
• Doctoral practicum and teaching: mentored teaching experience, leadership practicums or research assistantships to build teaching and administrative competencies.
• Dissertation: an independent, original research project under faculty supervision culminating in a written dissertation and defence, with expectation of preparation for peer-reviewed publication.

Entry requirements

• A master’s degree in nursing (MSN) or a closely related graduate degree from an accredited institution; applicants with equivalent preparation and extensive clinical/research experience may be considered.
• Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) licence in the jurisdiction where clinical activities will be completed.
• A strong academic record in prior graduate study; programmes commonly expect evidence of capability for graduate-level research.
• Professional CV or résumé documenting relevant clinical, leadership or research experience.
• Statement of purpose outlining research interests, career goals and fit with faculty expertise.
