What you'll study

The programme combines advanced coursework, comprehensive examinations, and a sustained original research project leading to a doctoral dissertation. Core study typically includes seminars in literary history and criticism, contemporary theory, and research methods. Students pursue specialised fields such as American literature, British literature, African American and ethnic literatures, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, literary theory, digital humanities, and rhetoric/composition.

• Year 1–2: Intensive seminars in major historical periods and theoretical approaches, research skills, and methods courses. Students develop reading lists and begin preparing for comprehensive examinations.
• Comprehensive exams: Written and/or oral exams test mastery of chosen fields and prepare students to formulate a dissertation prospectus.
• Dissertation stage: After passing exams and defending a prospectus, students undertake original research under the supervision of a faculty advisory committee, culminating in the dissertation and its public defence.
• Teaching experience: The department provides opportunities for graduate teaching and pedagogical training, including supervised teaching of composition and literature courses.
• Interdisciplinary opportunities: Students are encouraged to take electives and form collaborations with allied departments (history, philosophy, theatre, digital media), and to engage with the broader research community in Kansas City.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant masters degree (MA or equivalent) in English, literature, or a closely related humanities discipline. A strong academic record in previous graduate study, evidence of research potential, and preparedness for advanced work in literary studies are required.

• Academic transcripts demonstrating graduate-level coursework in literature or related fields.
• A substantial writing sample, such as a chapter of a masters thesis or a research paper showing ability in critical analysis and original argumentation.

• International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency through recognised tests or institutional equivalents.
• Some applicants may be invited to an interview; submission of standardised test scores (e.g. GRE) is subject to departmental policy and may be optional.
