What you'll study

The programme combines core historical methods with specialised modules covering the medieval and early modern periods. You will study political and social change across Europe, religious and intellectual movements such as monasticism, the Crusades, the Renaissance and the Reformation, and cultural expressions including art, literature, material culture and daily life.

• Core skills and methods: historical research methods, critical reading of primary sources, historiography, and public history approaches.
• Medieval-focused modules: early medieval polities, Byzantium and the Islamic Mediterranean, feudal society and economy, medieval religion and pilgrimage, manuscript culture and palaeography.
• Early modern-focused modules: Renaissance humanism, political change and state formation, the Reformation and confessionalisation, science and culture in the seventeenth century.
• Interdisciplinary options: material culture, art history, literature of the period, languages (where available), and comparative cultural studies.
• Research training: seminars in research design, a capstone research project or honours thesis, and practical training in archival methods and digital humanities tools for working with early sources.
• Experiential learning: local placements, internships with museums or archives, and opportunities for study abroad or field trips to historic sites.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a high-school diploma or equivalent. Admissions typically consider a combination of academic performance, a personal statement that explains your interest in medieval and early modern history, and academic references. Mature or transfer applicants are welcome and considered on the basis of previous study and relevant experience.

• Suggested preparation: courses in history, humanities and writing during secondary education; any study of foreign languages is an advantage.
