Students typically take core modules in regional history, political economy, cultural studies and social change, alongside methods courses such as qualitative field methods, comparative politics, or historiography.

Language study is a central component: students normally progress to advanced proficiency in a regional language through department-led courses and language labs. The programme usually culminates in a substantial research project, such as a master’s thesis or a capstone practicum, that applies theoretical and methodological training to a focused regional topic.

Entry requirements

For programmes with a language component, demonstrated language preparedness is beneficial; some applicants may be required to complete prerequisite language courses.
