What you'll study

The programme blends theory and applied practice to examine how globalisation shapes governance, markets, migration, culture and development. Core topics typically include global political economy, international institutions and governance, transnational migration and human rights, comparative development, and theories of globalisation.

Students also build quantitative and qualitative research skills through a methods sequence that covers research design, statistical analysis and qualitative fieldwork techniques. Programme components normally include a capstone research project or practicum placement with a local or international organisation, and elective options that allow deeper study in areas such as global health, environmental policy, international security, human rights, global media, and diaspora studies.

Teaching methods combine seminars, case studies, guest lectures from practitioners, workshops and supervised independent research. Wherever possible, students are encouraged to take internships with Chicago-based NGOs, consulates, think tanks and international firms to gain professional experience.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a bachelor's degree from a recognised institution in a relevant discipline such as international relations, political science, economics, sociology, anthropology or a closely related field. Some applicants may be invited for an interview. Work experience in international or cross-cultural settings is beneficial but not always required.
