This doctoral programme combines advanced coursework in educational leadership with rigorous training in research methods and a substantive dissertation. Core study areas typically include leadership theory and organisational behaviour in educational settings, supervision and instructional leadership, educational policy and law, finance and resource management, curriculum and assessment, and equity and diversity in schooling. Substantial emphasis is placed on quantitative and qualitative research methods, statistics, measurement, program evaluation and research design to prepare students to conduct original, publishable research.

Students progress from foundational seminars and research methods courses to specialised electives aligned with their research interests, culminating in comprehensive/qualifying examinations and an original doctoral dissertation. Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant master's degree (for example in education, educational leadership, administration, curriculum and instruction, or a closely related field) from an accredited institution. Typical admission materials include an academic transcript, a curriculum vitae or résumé, a personal statement outlining research interests and professional goals, and letters of recommendation from academic or professional referees. Demonstrated leadership experience in educational settings is highly desirable.

Applicants should also show preparation in research methods; students without sufficient background in statistics or research design may be asked to complete prerequisite coursework. Some applicants may be asked to provide GRE scores if required by the programme at the time of application. Admission is competitive and may include an interview with programme faculty.
