What you'll study

The programme combines advanced coursework, focused research training, supervised clinical scholarship and dissertation work. Core study areas typically include research design and statistics, neurogenic and developmental communication disorders, voice and motor speech disorders, swallowing (dysphagia), clinical practicum in advanced assessment and treatment techniques, and topics in hearing science and audiologic rehabilitation. Students engage in seminars that develop skills in grant writing, teaching pedagogy, ethical and evidence-based practice, and translational research.

Programme structure is centred on mentored research: students complete advanced didactic courses, participate in or lead empirical studies, present and publish findings, pass comprehensive or qualifying examinations, and produce an original doctoral dissertation. Clinical experiences occur through the university speech–language–hearing clinic and affiliated regional healthcare and educational partners, with opportunities to work in multidisciplinary teams and to develop telepractice and community outreach competencies.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a relevant master’s degree (for example in speech–language pathology or audiology) or an equivalent professional qualification and demonstrated preparation for doctoral-level study. Typical application materials include academic transcripts showing strong performance in undergraduate and graduate coursework, a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests and goals, and letters of recommendation from academic or professional referees. Evidence of prior clinical experience and familiarity with research methods is advantageous.

International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency in accordance with university policy. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to interview with faculty to discuss research fit and potential supervision arrangements. Admission is competitive and often contingent on identifying a faculty mentor whose research interests align with the applicant’s proposed area of study.
