What you'll study

The programme builds a strong foundation in the central areas of analytic and historical philosophy while allowing students to concentrate on Chinese philosophical traditions and cultural contexts through elective coursework and interdisciplinary study. Core philosophy modules typically include Introduction to Philosophy, Logic and Critical Thinking, Ethics, Epistemology, and the History of Western Philosophy. Courses orientated to Chinese philosophy and culture include Chinese Philosophy (covering Confucianism and Daoist thought), Buddhist Philosophy, Comparative Philosophy, and seminars on modern Chinese intellectual history and contemporary cultural issues.

Students are encouraged to combine philosophical study with language and area-studies classes. Typical supporting modules include Mandarin Chinese language at progressive levels (Elementary to Advanced), Classical Chinese or readings in translation, East Asian History, Chinese Literature and Religion in China. Advanced students take small seminars and a capstone project or senior thesis that integrates primary texts, secondary literature and, where relevant, language skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a secondary school diploma or equivalent with a record of strong academic achievement. Admissions typically consider overall grades, the academic rigour of prior studies, and evidence of strong written and critical thinking skills. Submission of a personal statement that explains your interest in philosophy and Chinese studies, and how you intend to combine them, is recommended. Some programmes also look favourably on a sample of written work.

While prior study of Mandarin or another modern language is helpful, it is not always required; intensive language pathways are normally available for beginners. Mature applicants and those with relevant experiential backgrounds are encouraged to apply. International applicants must meet the college's standard language proficiency requirements if English is not their first language.

Many students pursue internships, translation and research roles or go on to specialised language or area-studies master’s programmes.
