What you'll study

This programme combines core courses in historical methods and historiography with specialised modules that explore medieval and early modern Europe’s social, religious and cultural developments. You will study topics such as the transformation of European societies after the fall of Rome, the cultural and intellectual flowering of the High Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Reformation and confessional conflict, early modern state formation, and the social and cultural impact of exploration and empire.

• Core history skills: historical research methods, archival techniques, historical writing and historiographical debate.
• Medieval modules: subjects typically include medieval political institutions, monasticism and religious culture, medieval literature and material culture, and the Crusades.
• Early modern modules: topics often cover the Renaissance and humanism, Reformation and Counter-Reformation, early modern political thought, print culture and the history of science, and urban and social history of early modern Europe.
• Language and sources: emphasis on working with translated primary sources and, where possible, introductory language training relevant to the field (for example Latin or modern European languages) to support original-source research.
• Capstone and research: the degree culminates in a research seminar or senior thesis in which you design and complete an original research project using archival and secondary sources under faculty supervision.
• Experiential learning: opportunities for internships, independent study, and study abroad to study European archives, museums and historic sites, as well as partnerships with local historical societies and libraries.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a completed secondary-school qualification equivalent to a U.S. high-school diploma. Typical academic preparation includes coursework in humanities and social sciences. Presbyterian College considers academic records, a personal statement describing interest in history and the medieval/early modern field, and at least one academic reference.

• Recommended GPA: competitive applicants usually present a strong academic record in history, English, languages or related subjects.
• Standardised tests: the college’s policy on SAT/ACT can vary; consult the admissions office for current guidance.
• International applicants should provide recognised secondary qualifications and evidence of English proficiency when required (for example TOEFL or IELTS equivalents accepted by the college).
• Prior study of a modern language or classical languages is advantageous but not always mandatory; willingness to undertake language study as part of the programme is expected for students pursuing primary-source research.
