What you'll study

The programme builds advanced nursing knowledge across three linked pathways: Nursing Administration, Nursing Research and Clinical Nursing. Core modules typically cover advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, healthcare systems and policy, leadership and organisational behaviour, healthcare informatics, ethics and legal issues in nursing, and research methods and biostatistics. Pathway-specific study then focuses on:

• Nursing Administration: strategic management and finance in healthcare, human resources and workforce planning, quality improvement and patient safety, change management, and practicum placements in clinical leadership settings.
• Nursing Research: advanced research design, applied quantitative and qualitative methods, grant-writing and dissemination, data analysis, and an independent research project or thesis under faculty supervision.
• Clinical Nursing: advanced assessment and diagnostic reasoning, complex care management, specialty-focused practicum experiences, development of clinical protocols and evidence-based practice implementation.

Students complete a combination of seminars, simulation-based learning in clinical skills laboratories, supervised clinical practicum hours and either a capstone project or a research thesis depending on pathway and programme requirements. Elective options commonly include population health, gerontology, paediatric or psychiatric nursing topics, and healthcare quality improvement.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited programme or an equivalent qualification and to be a licensed, practising registered nurse in the relevant jurisdiction. Typical academic requirements include a competitive undergraduate GPA; many successful applicants have a cumulative GPA at or above a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Admission usually requires a current RN licence, a curriculum vitae, a personal statement outlining professional goals and suitability for the chosen pathway, and academic or professional references.

Additional requirements often include one or more years of clinical experience (recommended for administrative and clinical tracks), successful completion of a background check and required health clearances or immunisations, evidence of CPR certification, and completion of prerequisite coursework if applicable. Some applicants may be invited to an interview as part of the selection process. The programme typically offers options for full-time and part-time study and may include on-campus and online course delivery components depending on the pathway.

Graduates are prepared for a range of mid- to senior-level roles across healthcare settings. Common career paths include nurse manager or director of nursing, clinical nurse specialist, nurse researcher or research coordinator, quality improvement manager, clinical educator, and advanced practice roles where additional certification permits. The Nursing Research pathway also provides strong preparation for doctoral study (PhD or DNP) and for positions in academic nursing and research institutions.
