What you'll study

The programme combines core training in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics with a choice of advanced elective modules and a research project. In the taught stages you will cover advanced economic theory, dynamic macro models, estimation and inference methods for cross-section, time-series and panel data, and computational techniques used in applied work. Typical core topics include microeconomic theory (consumer and producer behaviour, optimisation, general equilibrium), macroeconomic dynamics (growth models, business cycles, monetary and fiscal analysis) and applied econometrics (identification, causal inference, forecasting).

Elective modules allow you to specialise across applied micro fields such as labour economics, industrial organisation, public economics, health economics, development economics, behavioural economics and game theory, as well as financial economics and topics in international trade. Teaching is delivered through lectures, problem classes, modelling workshops and assessed by a combination of coursework, exams and project work. The programme concludes with an independent research project or dissertation, supervised by a member of the department, in which you apply analytical and empirical techniques to a topic of your choice.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree in economics or a closely related discipline with substantial quantitative training. Successful candidates typically have taken undergraduate modules in calculus, linear algebra, statistics and introductory micro and macroeconomics. Where applicants come from non-economics backgrounds, demonstrable competence in mathematics and statistics is required.

Admissions assessors look for evidence of strong analytical ability and capacity for independent study, shown through academic transcripts, references and any relevant quantitative experience. Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate proficiency in English; additional documentation may be requested during the application process.

Graduates of the MSc Economics programme move into a wide range of roles where advanced economic analysis is central. Common destinations include economic research and policy roles in central banks, national governments and international organisations; consulting firms and economic advisory practices; financial institutions and asset management; and specialist roles in industry that require rigorous quantitative modelling.
