What you'll study

This programme combines advanced taught papers in core biomedical disciplines with practical laboratory training. Students typically take a coherent set of advanced subjects to deepen understanding of human biology, disease mechanisms and modern research techniques.

• Core topics: molecular and cellular biology, human physiology, immunology and pathology.
• Methodological and applied modules: molecular genetics and genomics, bioinformatics and biostatistics, advanced laboratory techniques, and experimental design.
• Optional research or professional practice: many students undertake a short laboratory-based research project or a supervised placement in a clinical or industry laboratory to apply skills in a real-world setting.
• Assessment: a mixture of written exams, coursework, laboratory practicals and, where applicable, a research report or placement assessment.

Entry requirements

Admission is intended for applicants who already hold a recognised bachelor’s degree with substantial science or health content and who demonstrate a strong academic record. Selection considers the relevance of prior study, research experience, and preparation for advanced biomedical topics.

• A relevant undergraduate degree in a biological, biomedical, health science or closely related discipline.
• A competitive academic record (applicants are expected to have an above-average result in their prior studies; equivalent grading descriptions such as a B+ average are commonly used as a guide).
• Applicants without a directly relevant degree but with substantial professional or research experience in laboratory or biomedical settings may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
• International applicants must meet the University’s English language requirements and provide documentation of qualifications assessed as equivalent to the entry standard.
