What you'll study

The MPH combines taught modules, practical skills development and an independent research project. Core topics typically include epidemiology, biostatistics, research methods and health policy and systems. Students also study behaviour change and health promotion, environmental and occupational health, health economics and inequities in health. Teaching balances quantitative and qualitative approaches so students learn to critically appraise evidence, design studies and analyse health data.

Programmes commonly include a substantial applied component: a workplace-based placement or consultancy project with a public health organisation, and a dissertation or capstone project that allows you to investigate a public health problem in depth. Optional modules allow specialisation in areas such as global health, maternal and child health, infectious disease control, or digital health and health informatics.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as health sciences, life sciences, social sciences, nursing, medicine or a related subject. A strong upper second-class (2:1) honours degree is typically required; candidates with a lower second-class degree (2:2) and substantial relevant professional experience may also be considered.

Relevant work experience in health, social care, research or policy is welcomed and can strengthen an application. All applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English; the programme generally expects a recognised postgraduate-level English test score.
