What you'll study

The Cultural Studies major combines theoretical and applied approaches to culture. Core topics typically include cultural theory and critical approaches, media and communication, visual culture, film studies, and contemporary popular culture. You will study modules in areas such as:

• Cultural Theory and Methods – foundational ideas from critical theory, postcolonial studies, gender and queer theory, and qualitative research methods.
• Media and Digital Culture – analysis of news, social media, digital platforms and their role in shaping public discourse.
• Visual and Material Cultures – museums, heritage, visual representation, curation and exhibition studies.
• Film and Media Production – film analysis and practical modules that introduce production contexts and audiences.
• Identity, Race and Gender – modules that examine the cultural construction of identity and intersectional approaches.
• Culture, Policy and Institutions – cultural policy, arts management and the relationships between culture and the state.
• Research Project or Capstone – a supervised research project, internship or capstone in final years to develop specialist skills and a portfolio of work.

The degree is delivered through lectures, small-group tutorials, seminars and project work. Students may combine Cultural Studies with other majors or minors across the Bachelor of Arts, study a language, and elect to undertake an additional honours year for research training and advanced study.

Entry requirements

Entry is available to applicants who have completed secondary education with a competitive ATAR or equivalent qualification. The University also admits mature-age applicants, students with vocational qualifications (TAFE) and international qualifications assessed as equivalent. Students whose first language is not English must meet the University of Adelaide's English language proficiency requirements through recognised tests or equivalent evidence.
