This degree builds progressive competence in spoken and written French while situating language learning in cultural, literary and social contexts. Early study focuses on grammar, vocabulary and communication skills, while intermediate and advanced levels emphasise fluency, academic writing and specialised registers.

Entry requirements

Admission is usually based on completion of an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent) qualification, or successful completion of recognised tertiary study. Applicants are expected to demonstrate academic readiness for undergraduate study in the humanities. Prior study in French is advantageous but not always required—there are pathways for beginners and for students with prior French experience.

All applicants whose prior education was not in English must meet the University's English language requirements through a recognised test or qualification. Mature-age applicants and applicants with relevant work or life experience are considered through alternative entry pathways.
