The Bachelor of Media and Communication (Immersive Media) at the University of Adelaide is a three-year undergraduate degree that combines core media studies with practical training in immersive technologies such as virtual, augmented and mixed reality. It suits students who want to develop creative, technical and critical skills to design interactive experiences and tell stories across emerging digital platforms.

What you'll study

This specialisation blends foundational media and communication theory with hands-on practice in immersive media production. You study topics such as media and cultural theory, storytelling and narrative design, digital production workflows, and ethics and law in media. Technical and studio units typically cover immersive design principles, 3D modelling and animation, spatial audio, user experience (UX) for XR, interactive scripting and game engines, and human–computer interaction.

The degree emphasises project-based learning: you will undertake practical labs and collaborative projects that move from concept to deployment, often culminating in a capstone or industry-linked project where you produce an original immersive application or experience. There are opportunities to take elective units from allied disciplines such as computer science, engineering, creative arts and design to broaden technical or artistic capabilities.

Entry requirements

  • Completion of a recognised secondary qualification (for domestic applicants, the senior secondary certificate) or an equivalent international qualification.
  • Admission is typically based on academic achievement (e.g. an ATAR or equivalent selection rank); meeting the minimum threshold does not guarantee selection where places are limited.
  • International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency through recognised tests or equivalent prior study; specific band or score requirements are set by the University.
  • Some applicants may be assessed on their portfolio or relevant experience if applying with non‑standard qualifications; work-integrated learning or previous study in related fields can strengthen an application.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles across a range of creative, technical and strategic positions. Common career paths include immersive/VR developer, XR designer, interactive producer, 3D artist, game designer, spatial audio specialist, user experience designer for immersive platforms, and digital content producer. The degree also supports careers in media strategy, creative technology consultancy, education and research in digital media, and roles within cultural institutions or live events that adopt immersive technologies.
