This degree combines foundational computing and programming with specialist cyber security subjects and practical laboratory work. Core topics typically include programming and software development, computer networks and operating systems, digital forensics, cryptography, secure system design, ethical hacking and vulnerability assessment, and security operations and incident response.

Students also study supporting mathematics and data analysis, human factors in security, and legal and ethical aspects of cyber security. The programme emphasises applied learning through hands-on lab classes, simulation environments, and a capstone project or industry-based project where students apply technical skills to real-world scenarios.

Elective options often allow study in areas such as cloud and container security, Internet of Things (IoT) security, security automation and orchestration, machine learning for security analytics, and specialised topics in mobile or embedded device protection.

Entry requirements

Entry is at undergraduate level and typically requires completion of a secondary school qualification equivalent to the Australian Year 12. Applicants are assessed on prior academic achievement; a background in mathematics and computing or related subjects is recommended but not always mandatory.

Domestic applicants may present a recognised Australian senior secondary certificate with an appropriate selection rank. International applicants need an equivalent secondary qualification. All applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate acceptable English language proficiency by providing recognised test results or other approved evidence.
