What you'll study

This four-year integrated Master (MEnv) combines modules in ecology and environmental science with economics, quantitative methods and environmental policy. The course is built around core scientific foundations (ecology, biodiversity, population dynamics, ecosystem processes), applied environmental economics (valuation, cost–benefit analysis, environment and development, resource economics) and skills training (statistics, modelling, GIS, remote sensing).

Typical programme structure includes a strong emphasis on field and laboratory work in the early years, a compulsory placement year between Years 3 and 4, and an independent research project or dissertation in the final year. You will study modules such as ecological field methods, conservation biology, ecosystem services, environmental policy and governance, environmental economics, quantitative environmental analysis, spatial analysis and environmental modelling. Optional modules allow you to focus on themes such as conservation management, climate impacts, freshwater ecology, agricultural and land-use systems, or energy and sustainability.

Practical learning is a key feature: regular field trips, laboratory classes, computer-based modelling and GIS sessions, and workshops on communicating science to non-specialist audiences. The placement year gives you an extended, credit-bearing experience in a professional setting such as an environmental consultancy, NGO, government agency, research institute or industry sustainability team.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to demonstrate strong academic achievement in secondary education and suitable preparation for degree-level study. Offers typically require good A-level/Highers/IB or equivalent qualifications, with preference given to applicants who have studied at least one relevant scientific or quantitative subject (for example biology, geography, environmental science, chemistry, mathematics or economics).

Typical applicants will also have evidence of practical or field experience (voluntary work, summer projects or school field courses) and an ability to work with quantitative data. International applicants should hold recognised equivalent qualifications. The University welcomes applications from mature students and those with non-traditional backgrounds; these applicants should provide evidence of recent study or relevant experience. All applicants must satisfy English language requirements where English is not their first language.
