This BSc (Hons) in Healthcare Science (Respiratory and Sleep Physiology) trains students to work with patients and diagnostic technologies to assess and manage respiratory and sleep disorders. It suits applicants who enjoy applied physiology, clinical measurement and patient‑facing practice, and who want a career within NHS diagnostics, research or further clinical scientist training.
The programme combines core physiological sciences with practical clinical assessment and diagnostics specific to respiratory and sleep medicine. In early years you build a strong foundation in human anatomy and physiology, cellular and cardiorespiratory physiology, and the principles of clinical measurement and instrumentation. Core practical skills include spirometry, lung volumes, gas exchange measurement, arterial blood gas analysis, overnight oximetry, polysomnography basics and non‑invasive ventilation techniques.
Later stages emphasise applied clinical practice, advanced respiratory physiology, sleep physiology and the interpretation of diagnostic tests. You will study research methods and statistics, professional and ethical practice in healthcare science, and complete a substantial independent research project or a practice‑based project. Clinical placements with NHS partners and simulated clinical laboratory sessions give hands‑on experience of patient assessment, data acquisition, device calibration and report writing.
