What you'll study

The MPH combines core public health disciplines with elective options so you can tailor the qualification to your career aims. Core topics typically include epidemiology, biostatistics, research methods, health systems and policy, and health promotion. You will also study public health ethics, programme evaluation and environmental and occupational health concepts.

Students choose between coursework-focused and research components: pathways commonly include a taught stream with a major project or a more research-intensive thesis. Elective papers allow specialisation in areas such as indigenous/Māori health, global health, communicable disease control, non-communicable disease prevention, maternal and child health, or health economics. Practical learning through applied projects, placements or a capstone research project is an expected feature of the programme.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need a relevant bachelor’s degree with a good academic record, or equivalent professional experience in a health or related field. Prior study in quantitative subjects (for example, statistics or epidemiology) is desirable and may be required for direct entry into certain advanced papers; applicants without this background may be asked to complete preparatory coursework.

International applicants must meet the University’s English language requirements. Additional supporting materials such as a statement of purpose, CV and references are typically required; applicants with substantial public health or clinical experience are considered with evidence of their professional standing.

Graduates of the MPH go on to roles across the public, private and non-government sectors.
