What you'll study

The MPH integrates core public health disciplines with applied research training. Typical core topics include epidemiology and applied biostatistics, research methods and critical appraisal, health promotion and behaviour change, health policy and systems, and principles of health protection.

Students combine taught modules with a substantial independent research project (dissertation) that allows you to investigate a public health question in depth under academic supervision. Optional modules commonly cover global and international public health, health economics, qualitative methods, implementation science, population health management and digital health.

Study modes are flexible to accommodate different needs: the programme is normally offered full‑time and part‑time, with blended delivery combining on‑campus teaching, seminars and online learning. Assessment mixes exams, coursework, group work and the dissertation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject such as medicine, nursing, allied health, life sciences, social sciences or a related discipline. Candidates with substantial relevant professional experience in health or social care may also be considered.

As this is a research‑led programme, applicants should be able to demonstrate numeracy and an ability to engage with quantitative and qualitative research methods. Evidence of English language proficiency is required from applicants whose first language is not English.

Graduates of the MPH progress to a wide range of public health roles in the NHS, local and national government, non‑governmental organisations, international agencies and the private sector. Typical job titles include public health practitioner, health improvement specialist, health protection officer, policy analyst, programme manager, research associate and epidemiologist (often with additional specialist training).

The degree also provides a strong foundation for further academic study such as research degrees (PhD) or professional specialisation in areas like health data science, health economics or infectious disease control.
