What you'll study

The programme builds on fundamental engineering science and advances into applied and research-led topics. Typical modules cover structural analysis and design (steel, concrete and timber), finite element methods, geotechnical engineering, soil–structure interaction, hydraulics and water resources engineering, transport systems and traffic engineering, construction materials and durability, and project and risk management. Students also study sustainability, life-cycle assessment and resilience of infrastructure, and take courses in computational methods, BIM and digital design workflows.

Study usually combines compulsory core courses, a set of specialised elective courses allowing a chosen track or personalised study path, laboratory and field practicals, group design projects, and an independent research master’s thesis. Teaching methods include lectures, problem classes, computer modelling exercises, experimental work in VUB’s laboratories and collaborative design studios. Opportunities exist to undertake internships, industry projects or an Erasmus exchange with partner institutions.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline. Candidates should have solid grounding in mathematics, mechanics, materials and basic fluid mechanics. Applications typically require a certified transcript of records, a curriculum vitae, a motivation letter outlining the intended specialisation and previous project or laboratory experience, and one or two academic or professional references.

International applicants may be asked to provide proof of language proficiency in the language of instruction; VUB also provides information and support for students who need to meet language requirements. In some cases the admissions committee may set additional conditions (such as taking specific preparatory courses) to remedy missing background knowledge.

Graduates enter a broad range of professional roles in the public and private sectors. Common career paths include structural or geotechnical engineer, hydraulic or water resources engineer, transport planner or traffic engineer, construction manager, project engineer, consultant in infrastructure design and rehabilitation, and roles in asset management and risk assessment.
