What you'll study

The programme builds a broad foundation in communication theory, media sociology and research methods, then allows students to specialise through electives and practical modules. Core topics typically include introduction to communication studies, media and society, theories of mass communication, organisational and political communication, intercultural communication, and media law and ethics.

Research and methods are emphasised from early on: qualitative and quantitative research methods, survey design, content analysis and basic statistics prepare students to design and evaluate studies. Practical courses cover digital communication, social media strategy, public relations, advertising, and basic audiovisual production and editing. Students also complete seminars on journalism practices and storytelling, and courses on data visualisation and information design are often available.

The degree normally culminates in a supervised bachelor’s project or thesis and includes a work placement or internship component to gain professional experience. Teaching combines lectures, seminars, lab work and project-based assignments, with opportunities for collaborative projects with local media, NGOs or public institutions in Brussels.

Entry requirements

Admission requires a recognised secondary school diploma or equivalent qualification permitting access to higher education in the applicant’s country. Because the programme is offered in Dutch, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in Dutch; international applicants without a Dutch secondary diploma will need to show an accepted language certificate or evidence of equivalent competence.

VUB may also require standard administrative documents for international students (certified transcripts, passport copy, proof of previous education). Prior experience in related subjects (languages, social sciences, media) is useful but not mandatory. Selection is generally based on academic record; some applicants may be asked to provide a motivation letter or participate in an interview.

Typical entry-level positions include journalist or reporter, corporate communications officer, public relations specialist, social media manager, content producer, campaign officer in NGOs or political organisations, and media researcher or analyst.

Because of the programme’s research training, alumni also progress to roles in policy analysis, market research, or consultation, and many continue to postgraduate study (for example a Master in Communication Sciences, Journalism, Public Affairs or related social sciences) to specialise further.
