What you'll study

The MSc Criminology combines advanced study of criminological theory with applied and methodological training in qualitative and quantitative research. You will explore core topics such as historical and contemporary theories of crime, patterns and causes of offending, the sociology of punishment, victimology, and the organisation and practice of policing and criminal justice institutions. Modules typically cover research design and methods (including data collection, analysis and ethics), crime prevention, and specialist areas such as cybercrime, youth justice, gender and crime, or restorative justice.

The programme is delivered through a mix of lectures, seminars, workshops and independent study, and culminates in a substantial dissertation or independent research project that allows you to investigate a criminological question in depth under academic supervision.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree in criminology, sociology, law, psychology, social policy or another related social science subject. The usual standard is a UK upper second-class honours degree (2:1) or an international equivalent. Candidates with a lower second-class degree (2:2) may be considered where they can demonstrate relevant professional experience, strong academic references or evidence of capacity for postgraduate study.

All applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate proficiency in English. You will also need to provide an academic reference and a personal statement outlining your interest in criminology and your reasons for choosing the programme.
