What you'll study

The programme offers an interdisciplinary curriculum drawing on sociology, political science, human geography, development studies, social anthropology and public policy. Students take advanced courses that cover research design and methods (qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods), contemporary social theory, policy analysis and specialised topics such as social inequality, indigenous studies, migration, urban and regional development, environmental justice and community engagement.

The research component is supervised by academic staff with expertise across the social sciences and typically involves fieldwork, secondary data analysis or practice-based investigation leading to a dissertation that demonstrates capacity for independent research.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a relevant bachelor's degree with honours, or an equivalent qualification demonstrating strong academic performance in a social science or related discipline. Candidates with a three-year degree plus significant professional or research experience in a relevant field may also be considered.

Admission normally requires the submission of academic transcripts, a research proposal or statement of intent, and academic or professional references. International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency in line with the University of Waikato’s postgraduate requirements.
