What you'll study

This programme combines rigorous coursework, specialised electives and an independent research thesis. Core topics typically include Probability Theory and Stochastic Processes, Mathematical Statistics and Statistical Inference, Regression and Generalised Linear Models, Multivariate Statistical Analysis, Time Series Analysis, and Bayesian Methods. Emphasis is also placed on computational skills: Statistical Computing and Data Analysis using R, Python and specialised software, as well as training in numerical methods for statisticians.

Students usually take a mix of required courses and electives. Common electives and specialised modules include Econometrics, Biostatistics, Design of Experiments, Spatial Statistics, Machine Learning and Big Data Analytics, Survival Analysis and Nonparametric Statistics. The programme also incorporates research seminars, journal clubs and a supervised thesis project or dissertation that culminates in a formal defence.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally hold a recognised bachelor’s degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, computer science, engineering or a closely related discipline, with strong performance in mathematics and quantitative subjects. Typical supporting materials include official transcripts, a statement of purpose, and two or more academic references.

Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of English proficiency; international applicants may also need to demonstrate Chinese language ability for participation in some local activities, although instruction for the master’s programme is typically in Chinese and/or English depending on the course. Some candidates may be asked to sit an entrance examination or attend an interview as part of the selection process.
