What you'll study

The programme starts with a foundation year that builds core academic skills and introduces essential computing concepts. Typical foundation-year topics include programming fundamentals, discrete mathematics and logic, introduction to digital systems, and academic and professional skills such as academic writing and study techniques.

After successful completion of the foundation year you move on to the undergraduate stages of the Computing degree. Degree-level study commonly covers:

• Programming and software development – object-oriented programming, software engineering principles, and practical application development.
• Systems and architecture – operating systems, computer architecture and embedded/digital systems.
• Data and databases – relational databases, data modelling and introductory data analytics.
• Networks and security – networking fundamentals, cybersecurity principles and secure system design.
• Web and mobile technologies – front- and back-end web development and mobile application development.
• Theory and maths for computing – discrete mathematics, algorithms and basic computational theory.

Entry requirements

The foundation route is aimed at applicants who do not yet meet the direct-entry requirements for the standard undergraduate Computing degree. Typical applicants include those with vocational qualifications, mature learners returning to study, or students who need to strengthen their mathematics and study skills.

• Acceptable qualifications often include national vocational qualifications (such as BTEC National), Access to Higher Education Diplomas, or other recognised Level 3 qualifications.
• Applicants are normally expected to have GCSE-equivalent passes in English and mathematics. Where applicants do not have formal qualifications, relevant work experience or an admissions interview may be considered.
• International applicants will need to demonstrate English language proficiency through an approved test or recognised qualification.
