What you'll study

The Politics and Sociology degree offers a blend of modules that cover political institutions, political theory, social structures and methods for studying society and politics. You will study foundational topics such as political ideas and ideologies, comparative politics, international relations, social theory, social stratification and culture. Research methods and statistics are embedded across the course to give you practical skills in qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Typical Year 1 modules introduce core concepts in both disciplines and research skills. Years 2 and 3 allow you to choose specialised options—examples include contemporary political ideologies, public policy, globalisation and development, criminology, media and society, and migration studies—culminating in a final-year dissertation or substantial research project. The programme emphasises seminar discussion, independent research and applied assessment forms such as policy briefs, research reports and presentations.

There are opportunities to take optional work placements, a year in industry or a study-abroad year depending on the pathway you choose and availability, helping you to gain practical experience and professional contacts.
