What you'll study

This degree combines core computing skills with specialist AI topics. In early stages you will build a strong foundation in programming, algorithms, discrete mathematics and software engineering. Progressing through the course you will study modules such as machine learning, data mining, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics and knowledge representation. You will also cover supporting areas that are important to modern AI practice, including databases, statistics for data science, human–computer interaction, and AI ethics and governance.

The programme emphasises practical work: laboratory exercises, coding assignments, group design projects and a substantial individual final-year project that involves designing, implementing and evaluating an AI system. There is typically an option to take a placement/sandwich year or work-based learning module to gain industry experience and apply skills in real-world contexts.

Entry requirements

Typical applicants will have post-16 qualifications with a strong background in Mathematics and evidence of programming or related STEM study. Acceptable qualifications include A-levels (including Mathematics), BTECs with a significant computing or mathematical component, the International Baccalaureate, or equivalent recognised qualifications. Applicants without formal computing qualifications but with relevant experience or a strong mathematics background are considered. GCSE-level English and Mathematics (or recognised equivalents) are normally expected.

Alongside formal qualifications, successful candidates normally demonstrate practical interest in computing and AI through personal projects, coding experience, relevant work or extracurricular activities. Admissions may require a personal statement and satisfactory references; those for whom English is an additional language may need to meet the university's English language requirements.

Graduates leave prepared for technical roles in industry, public sector and research. Common job titles include AI engineer, machine learning engineer, data scientist, software developer, computer vision engineer and data analyst.
