What you'll study

The LLB covers the substantive and procedural foundations of English law alongside optional modules that reflect contemporary legal practice and interdisciplinary perspectives. Core subjects typically include Contract Law, Tort Law, Criminal Law, Land Law, Public (Constitutional and Administrative) Law, Equity & Trusts and Legal Methods/Jurisprudence. You will also study aspects of European and International Law and have the opportunity to take options such as Commercial and Company Law, Human Rights, Family Law, Employment Law, Intellectual Property, Environmental Law and Clinical Legal Education.

Teaching combines lectures, small-group seminars, workshops and assessed coursework. Practical learning is integrated through mooting, negotiation exercises, client interviewing and pro bono placements. In the final year students often complete a substantial research project or dissertation and can choose advanced topics that prepare for specialist practice or postgraduate study.

Typically delivered over three years full-time, the programme also offers pathways or opportunities for a year abroad or a placement year through exchange partnerships or professional placement schemes where available.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong academic achievement in secondary-level qualifications. The programme accepts a range of qualifications including A-levels, the International Baccalaureate, Access to Higher Education diplomas and recognised international equivalents. There is no requirement for a particular A-level subject, but evidence of strong written communication, critical thinking and analytical skills is important.

Mature applicants and those with relevant work experience are welcome; such applications will be considered on their individual merits. All applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the University's English language requirements through an approved test or qualification.

Career prospects

Graduates from the LLB pursue a wide range of legal and non‑legal careers. Common professional routes include qualifying as a solicitor or barrister (via the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or Bar training paths), becoming a CILEX lawyer or working in legal support roles. The degree also prepares students for careers in policy, government and public administration, compliance and risk, human resources, business and finance, nongovernmental organisations and advocacy.

The course’s emphasis on analytic writing, research, oral advocacy and professional ethics makes graduates attractive to employers across the public, private and third sectors.
